Stand with Kasey and Matt for Logan’s Healing
Story
Hi everyone, my name is Ashley Costello, and I’m a friend and neighbor of the wonderful Wilkerson family. I’m reaching out to you today with a heavy heart to ask for your support for Kasey, Matt, and their incredible son, Logan.
In July of 2024, what seemed like a typical childhood injury in the pool led to Logan complaining of back and neck pain. What followed was a whirlwind of appointments and unexpected news that no family should ever face.
Initially, a chiropractor noted scoliosis in Logan. A second opinion confirmed a significant 30-degree curvature in his upper spine, sending a wave of panic through his parents. A visit to the pediatrician was next. She was not convinced it was scoliosis and was more concerned about the weakness Logan showed in his left leg.
By mid-August, they were referred to an orthopedist. In September, the orthopedist’s concern led to an urgent MRI the very next morning. The results were devastating: a tumor was discovered inside Logan’s spinal cord, spanning approximately seven levels in his cervical-thoracic spine.
The family was quickly referred to Kaiser surgeons, and on October 15th, Logan underwent a grueling 12-hour surgery for tumor resection and scoliosis hardware installation. While the surgeons were able to achieve what they believed to be a successful removal, the news they shared halfway through the surgery changed everything. Logan’s tumor was behaving like a high-grade glioma, a type of cancer with a high rate of recurrence. Despite the surgeon achieving a gross total resection (removing more than 90%), which is rare for this type of tumor, the prognosis remained challenging. They were quite sure it was a Diffuse Midline Glioma.
Logan bravely endured six weeks of radiation and several rounds of chemotherapy. Unfortunately, the chemotherapy proved ineffective against this specific type of cancer as it doesn’t cross the blood-brain barrier. In March, Logan began a promising clinical trial at UCSF and showed incredible progress for six weeks with no side effects. However, recent scans have revealed the heartbreaking news that the tumor has returned.
Logan now faces another, more intensive clinical trial, requiring several preparatory procedures with the hope of starting in June. This next phase of treatment will be incredibly demanding for Logan and his family. He will need to be hospitalized for several weeks, and both Kasey and Matt will be unable to work as they dedicate themselves to being by Logan’s side, providing him with the unwavering support he needs.
This journey has already placed a significant financial burden on the Wilkerson family, and the upcoming weeks and months will only add to that stress. I am creating this GoFundMe in hopes of relieving some of that financial pressure so that Kasey and Matt can focus entirely on Logan and his treatment.
Please keep this courageous family in your thoughts and prayers. If you are able to contribute financially, any amount, big or small, would be deeply appreciated and would go directly towards Logan’s medical expenses and the family’s living costs during this challenging time.
Let’s come together as a community and lift the Wilkerson family up, allowing them to focus on what truly matters: Logan’s health and healing.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
